Dorset Toy Soldiers 54mm Space Figures – first pair painted

The Dorset Soldiers 54mm metal space range sculpted by Giles Brown are a great homage to 1930s and 1950s type space figures such as Flash Gordon.

I have finished the first two figures with their optional clear space helmets.

The main male character in the Dorset space range is officially called Captain Courage.

The Captain is painted to match my playworn “faking lead” plastic Dark Trooper figures, of which he could be their Commander or Officer.

The female figure was called Space Reporter Dot Dash by Giles Brown and I have chosen a different uniform colour scheme design for her.

And with Space helmets on …

Their different paint schemes are influenced by the opposite goals

1. My ongoing Dark Trooper repaint of familiar Star Wars figures (to escape the laser rivet counters of The Star Wars ‘canon’?)

2. The interesting new characters or uniforms in Star Wars: Andor series (Disney+ prequel to the Star Wars: Rogue One film which was a prequel to the original 1977 Star Wars film (A New Hope Episode IV). That’s a lot of backstory …

One of the new characters is part of the ‘Rising Officer’ class of the gathering evil Galactic Empire is an ISB (Imperial Security Bureau) officer called Dedra Meero (played very buttoned down and straight-faced by Denise Gough). Her quiet role had been tracking potential Rebel activity through disparate data mentions of stolen Imperial equipment, although she later resorts to interrogation.

Denise Gough in an an interview said “Tony [Gilroy] wrote the first scenes for us to cheer for Dedra, but in the end you don’t do it anymore. She is not just a woman in a man’s world, but a fascist in a world of fascists. It was important to see that power corrodes women as much as men”.

Not ostensibly a nice character but a quietly determined one that oddly somehow gains your sympathy …

The white tunic and dark trousers and shiny boots of my space figure echo the Dedra Meero costume.

Interesting to see the uniform sketches – The Imperial Troops retain that Space Nazis / 1930s fascist / Nazi Germany look.

I’m not entirely sure why the figure’s hair ended up painted gold, probably to differentiate it from the sand yellow breathing tanks? It adds that shiny space series element anyway.

This spacewoman originally as a civilian space reporter had no weapon, but I reckoned that my Imperious Empyre Officer would have at least a side arm.

My stockpile of white metal WW2 Timpo Swoppet weapons had a handy automatic pistol spare, so this was attached and a simple belt and holster painted and inked in.

The figure is shown writing down with a space note pad or screen and space pen, checking data and tracking down space crime and rebellion?

It is not unusual to find the rare space woman figures in their original SciFi series like Star Trek in some background Tech support role. The female Galaxy / Laser Team Tim Mee female space figure is shown unarmed with a data entry port or keyboard.

Those Dorset Toy Soldier Space Figures

The Dorset Toy Soldier Range has been rereleased by Antony at Imperial Miniatures; I mentioned their re-release back in an April post:

  1. Excellent work, the figures have painted up very well indeed. Interesting to see the two different manufacturer’s figures side by side
