Pencil Eraser Rubber Soldiers

I found this interesting quartet of pencil rubber Toy Soldiers / Green Army Men when I popped into town recently.

Three of the designs you will recognise are familiar copies or helmeted piracies of the old Airfix 1:32 British Paratroops wearing berets, which form the backbone of many 40+mm to 54mm cheap China toy soldier copies.

Mutation and copying has given them almost Victorian bowler hats (instead of British “battle bowler” steel helmets?)

A more intriguing figure is the standing rifleman (bottom right).

These figures were only 80p each but I desisted from buying as most of the copies I found had missing hands or rifle tips or bases – the puttees are obviously a wee point. The bottom of the box was full of bases.

Customers rummaging through the tub probably led to some of this damage.

These eraser figures are obviously novelties and would not stand up to much play and would probably disintegrate over time. So here are three of them preserved in digital form on the House Of Marbles online shop:

The original 1:32 Airfix figures (still available) are shown here for comparison:

A little internet search of images revealed some interesting packaging and alternative more American GI poses:

The punning title of this pack “War On Error” recalls the post 2001 or 9/11 phrases of George Dubya Bush. Back panel reveals the pack was produced 2013 by Mustard Gifts / Viral Brands.

Clearly aimed in its write up blurb at being “six tiny green GIs” or American figures, despite their British Paratroop roots.

Note the phrase “This is a Novelty Item and Not a Toy”

  1. Interesting post. Would they be worth picking up if you were to preserve them with myriad coats of pva , or at least two! Another thought was for you to buy a few as garrison troops to be stationed in the garden. It would be diverting to see how they would stand up to the weather.

    1. I did wonder about PVA, but physically I think some of these are weak (point) at the ankles. My late National Serviceman Dad always said to me that wearing boots all the time gives you weak ankles. Hasn’t happened to me yet. I may pick up one or two next time.
